See how easy it is to give your hands a rest with Super Cruise, and the Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate.
CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY
With 400,000 miles and counting of compatible highways in the U.S. and Canada, there are plenty of regions where attentive drivers can take advantage of Super Cruise.
The system uses a data connection from GMC Connected Services for real-time precise positioning and periodic Super Cruise map updates. The vehicle’s cameras, sensors and LiDAR map data are used to help the driver stay centered in their lane while driving hands-free. This helps detect road positioning, curves, current travel speed and surrounding vehicles. Adaptive Cruise Control
Inside the cabin is a Driver Attention System consisting of a camera integrated on top of the steering column and infrared emitters integrated into the steering wheel. These components help ensure the driver is paying attention.
GOING HANDS-FREE
There’s no trick to using Super Cruise if all the required conditions are met.
To start, a driver must already be using Adaptive Cruise Control.
A Super Cruise symbol will display on the instrument cluster if a compatible road is detected. The driver can then press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel when it is safe to do so. Once the Super Cruise symbol and light bar on the steering wheel turn green, and the vehicle is centered in the lane, the driver can remove their hands from the wheel.
Drivers must always pay attention to the road while using Super Cruise. Otherwise, the Driver Attention System will initiate three separate prompts until the driver returns their attention to the road.
- First Prompt: The light bar on the steering wheel will begin flashing green to alert the driver to return attention back to the road.
- Second Prompt: The steering wheel light bar will flash red until the driver firmly takes hold of the steering wheel. In addition, chimes will sound, and the Safety Alert Seat will vibrate. The vehicle’s acceleration will disengage, but Adaptive Cruise Control will remain functioning.
- Third Prompt: A voice will inform the driver to take control immediately of the steering wheel if the light bar continues to flash red. If the driver doesn’t take immediate control, the system will slow the vehicle and bring it to a complete stop in the lane of travel. An Emergency-Certified OnStar Advisor
* will call into the vehicle to check on the driver. Super Cruise and Adaptive Cruise Control will also be disengaged until the next ignition cycle.
ENHANCED NAVIGATION
Sometimes even the shortest trips behind the wheel of a vehicle require preparation, whether that’s having a full tank of fuel or the best possible route.
That’s why drivers have a convenient way to plan for hands-free driving on Super Cruise-compatible roads by using Google Maps™ on the new multicolor 13.4-inch diagonal touchscreen and GMC Infotainment System
Super Cruise-compatible roadways will appear as part of the route overview on the touchscreen and will be distinguished in a white highlight.
The white line will disappear once a driver has selected a route and the view on the touchscreen is showing the route as active. Drivers need only select the Alternate Routes Overview on the touchscreen to switch views and find a Super Cruise-compatible road. In addition, the new large touchscreen allows for a wide range of screen combinations and reconfigurability.
HANDS-FREE MANEUVERS
It’s not just curves and travel speed that Super Cruise is capable of handling for the Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate.
Drivers can also let Super Cruise do the work of changing lanes when traveling on a compatible road.
For example, if the vehicle is traveling on a divided freeway at a set speed of 65–70 mph and is behind someone traveling 60 mph, the system’s Automatic Lane Change when enabled will look for an opening once the following gap is shortened. If a suitable opening is detected, Super Cruise will automatically initiate the turn signal and change lanes without the driver doing anything other than paying attention to the road.
If no opening is detected, Super Cruise will slow the vehicle to a minimum gap distance until an opening is found.
Drivers can also opt to use the turn signal for Lane Change on Demand. When the turn signal is activated by the driver, the system will look for an acceptable opening in the desired lane and alert other vehicles that a lane change is imminent. The vehicle will change into the desired lane if an opening is detected. If the lane is unavailable, the driver will be notified that changing into a lane must be completed manually. The system will display messages like “looking for an opening” or “changing lanes.”
When a driver initiates a manual lane change, they need only take control of the wheel. The light bar on the steering wheel will automatically change color from green to blue. Once the maneuver is completed, the driver can remove their hands from the wheel once the vehicle is centered in the lane and the steering wheel light bar turns green.
HANDS-FREE CAPABILITY
There are certain expectations drivers have for GMC pickup trucks when it comes to the latest in technology and professional-grade capability.
That’s why Super Cruise has been enhanced for the new Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate to function while trailering. The technology is compatible with trailers up to the allowable weight limits of both trucks (Lane Change on Demand and Automatic Lane Change are not available while trailering).
In addition, the new Denali and Denali Ultimate have a powertrain lineup that will be ready for work or play. The 3.0L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission will be available for both trims. This powerful and efficient diesel has best-in-class 277 diesel horsepower
So whether it’s pulling a utility trailer for a home project or an RV for a camping trip, drivers not only have plenty of power under the hood but can let Super Cruise give their hands a rest while keeping their eyes on the road.
